Georgie Blalock, the acclaimed author of The Other Windsor Girl, delivers an enchantingly reimagined fictional portrait of Wallis Simpson through the lens of her cousin who is engaged to spy on the Duchess of Windsor for her alleged Nazi sympathies and finds much more than she bargained for!

American Amelia Montague defied her family five years ago to marry the man she loved, but that decision cost her everything. Disowned by her family, and left a penniless widow after her husband's death, Amelia becomes her cousin Wallis Simpson's private secretary in France. With no other prospects available, Amelia has no choice but to succeed, and under their Aunt Bessie's direction, hopes to have a positive influence on Wallis and the Duke of Windsor.

During the next two years, Amelia realizes that not everything with the Windsors is glittering happiness. Beneath the façade of the besotted couple simmers Wallis's rage at her stunted ambition, and the couple soon reveal themselves to be self-centered Nazi supporters who pursue their own interests at any cost.

When the Germans invade France, and the Windsors leave Amelia to escape the Gestapo on her own, Amelia finds herself in position to work for the most unlikely of employers: MI5 and the FBI. Convinced to work undercover, Amelia joins the Windsors in Nassau and soon realizes that Wallis's treachery extends far deeper than the US and British government even knows...

Richly imaginative, Georgie Blalock's novel stuns as it explores two women, opposites in every way, and the choices they make to survive both war and each other. . .

In 1937, Amelia Montague has few prospects after her husband's death. Disowned by her family and with mounting debt, she is desperate to make herself indispensable to her cousin Wallis Simpson as a private secretary. But Wallis is difficult and demanding as the date of her wedding to the Duke of Windsor draws near. Many close to the crown are still punishing the duke for abdicating his throne, and his brother who replaced him as king of England refuses to acknowledge Wallis as a member of the royal family. Snubbed and exiled to France, Wallis and the duke surround themselves with sycophants and, more troubling to Amelia, Nazi officials and supporters who are making promises to return the former king to his throne. When it becomes apparent that the couple's plans aren't just idle talk, Amelia must collaborate with MI5 and the FBI to stop Wallis and the duke from handing England over to Germany. VERDICT Those unfamiliar with Wallis Simpson may wish for more backstory, but Blalock (An Indiscreet Princess) sketches out enough of the history that readers won't be lost for long. A solid entry into the World War II subgenre that will entertain and educate historical fiction fans.--Portia Kapraun

Impoverished widow Amelia is in need of employment. Her cousin Wallis, Duchess of Windsor and wife to the former king of England, is in need of a personal secretary. It's a good match: Wallis has a loyal ally in Amelia, who is quickly swept up into the glamor and privilege of her employers' lives in Paris, even as she tries to ignore their dubious friends and Nazi connections. With the outbreak of war, Wallis reveals her true colors when she forces Amelia to return to occupied Paris as part of a self-serving scheme and then abandons her to the Nazis. Here the story takes a surprising and exciting turn--rescued by the American embassy, disillusioned Amelia agrees to be trained as a spy and return to the Windsors, now ensconced in the Bahamas but still scheming away. Readers will become caught up in the plot and hold their breath as Amelia comes into her own and risks everything to keep the Windsors and the Nazis from succeeding in their plan to bring Britain to its knees.
