A celebration of basketball by way of the 100 greatest players to ever grace the court in the history of the NBA—from The Athletic's foremost basketball writers and analysts the game has to offer. With a foreword by Charles Barkley.

Over the course of 100 luminous player profiles, the best sports newsroom on the planet paints vivid portraits of the game's most compelling characters. There's George Mikan, who was cut from his high school team because he wore glasses, then went on to become the fledgling NBA's first transcendent star. Gary Payton, called "The Glove" for his skintight defense, who talked as much trash to his teammates as he did to his opponents on the court. Dennis Rodman, who started playing basketball at age 20, and in a few short years went from working as a janitor at the airport to being one of the strangest superstars that sport has ever known. Allen Iverson, who drew inspiration from hip hop for his inimitable style and swagger, on and off the court. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was so dominant in the paint that they changed the rules—and Steph Curry, who was so dominant outside it that he seemed to expand the very boundaries of the court.

The Basketball 100, edited by award-winning reporters David Aldridge and John Hollinger, also answers the game's toughest, most important questions: How should we weight championship rings, versus statistical profiles, versus the "eye test"? Were the great players of yesteryear, like Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, propelled by the inferior athleticism of their competition or would they have been transcendent in any era? And of course, who's the GOAT—MJ or LeBron? Speaking of GOATs, for the book, Hollinger (inventor of the statistical metric PER) has created a new benchmark, GOAT Points.

Wonderfully written, authoritative, and full of joy, The Basketball 100 is a fitting tribute to the greatest sport in the world.

Portraits of the hundred best players in the history of the National Basketball Association. Veteran sports journalists Aldridge, a fixture in NBA arenas since the late 1980s, and Hollinger, author of the well-regarded seriesPro Basketball Prospectus, oversaw the compilation and ranking of the 100 greatest players in NBA history to date as determined by the staff ofThe Athletic. As with a previous title, The Football 100, the players are ranked in descending order, accompanied by vividly written entries that chronicle their on-court exploits and offer a broader look at their personalities, social consciences, and shortcomings. The stories are composed by some of the finest basketball writers around, including Jared Weiss, Sam Amick, and Aldridge and Hollinger themselves. Each seamlessly weaves the history and evolution of the league into the player portraits. In any such exercise of ranking players over a long period of time, it is difficult to balance objective and subjective factors when judging players of different eras and different rules. Hollinger has gamely attempted to mitigate this by introducing his newly minted metric, GOAT points ("Greatest of All Time, duh"), which guided the decision-making ofThe Athletic staff and is detailed in full. Aldridge adds a fascinating essay that convincingly argues that the installation of the 24-second shot clock in the 1954-55 season saved the league. While it may be the case that contributor Jon Greenberg's assertion that Michael Jordan's ranking as the greatest player in NBA history "is not in dispute," there is plenty for NBA fans to argue about. The editors andAthletic staff did as well as could be expected to avoid recency bias, though some players--most notably Larry Bird--are horribly underrated. The book includes a foreword written by player turned broadcaster Charles Barkley in his inimitable style. An engaging and fun must-read for any basketball fan.

Making a best-of list is never easy because of the many factors that go into determining if someone is the best of the best. Led by Aldridge and John Hollinger, the 40 NBA writers of the Athletic undertake the seemingly impossible task of ranking the 100 best basketball players. Who is deserving and why? Can current players make the list? The contributing writers manage to answer those questions while also telling 100 individual stories encompassing players' lives, their upbringing, and the statistics that make them the best. A list like this one inevitably asks if a player's athletic ability outweighs their personal shortcomings, and to that end, the authors don't shy away from the unsavory aspects of players' lives but also do not let those moments overshadow players' career accomplishments. Basketball fans of all ages will appreciate the time and effort put into this book--even if they don't agree with the rankings--and will love learning new things about players from the past and present. Let the debates begin!

David Aldridge and John Hollinger--senior staffers for the New York Times sports vertical The Athletic--present a fun, engaging, and insightful compilation of the best and biggest stars in the 75-year history of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Basketball Hall-of-Famer Charles Barkley gets the book off to a great start with a jocular forward, followed by Aldridge's heartfelt introduction on what the game has meant to him and to others who love the sport. The write-ups are extensive, with engrossing backstories, human interest anecdotes, and play-by-play highlights of players' most pivotal games and moments. Career stats (points per game, rebounds, and assists averages) and achievements (All-NBA and All-Star selections) are listed. Players from every era are represented, including current superstars LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant. Hakeem Olajuwon and Nikola Jokic are also mentioned. The book details a metric created by Hollinger that's called GOAT Points, which applies numerical values for ranking players. Readers may question players' ranks or inclusion but never their talent and accomplishments. The work finishes with Hollinger's essay about how the three-point shot saved basketball. Let the debates begin. VERDICT An entertaining, fact-filled book about the biggest stars throughout NBA history. Sports fans will devour this and refer to it often.--Rob Tench
