The strong second book (after Silver Silence) in Singh’s second Psy-Changeling series delves deeper into the sophisticated web of intricately complex relationships found in the elaborately detailed universe where changelings, psychically gifted psy, and humans must live in harmony. Kaia is a changeling and cook who is fiercely loyal to BlackSea, the organization of water-based changelings. Her caregiving instincts are roused by the sole patient in her home base’s clinic: Bowen Knight, the security chief for the Human Alliance. Bowen is recovering from a near-fatal bullet wound and also suffering from the malfunctioning of a prototype psy-blocking chip implanted in his brain, which will kill him if it’s not fixed or removed. His only chance of recovery lies with BlackSea, where he plans to help the changelings find their missing clanmates and puzzle out the Alliance’s involvement in the disappearances. Intrigue and the tangled knots of politics are the author’s hallmarks, once again beautifully illustrated alongside a heartfelt romance between two flawed souls. Bo and his BlackSea security counterpart, Malachai Rhys, begin investigating the disappearances and realize Hugo has a few secrets of his own. Meanwhile, the bond between Kaia and Bo intensifies and they try to pack a lifetime of experiences into the limited time they have before Bo's treatment might fail, but when the chemical compound at the heart of the treatment is stolen, a whole other set of threats may come between them. Paranormal romance author Singh continues her Psy-Changeling Trinity series with her typically impeccable worldbuilding, and fans will enjoy the foray into the oceanic world of BlackSea. This installment captivates with its intensity and liveliness despite an oddly zigzagging final quarter.Another intricately plotted, vividly sensual love story from a romance favorite.

The mesmerizing yet furious Maia, among them, is convinced the Human Alliance is responsible for the disappearance of some of the sea changelings. Bo's life miraculously has been saved, but it's only a matter of time before a specialized chip implanted in his head to block Psy telepathic interference fails and destroys his brain along with it; he has only a five percent chance of survival. But Bo is falling for Maia, and with no time to lose, he needs to get to the bottom of the strange occurrences. Singh's vivid, relatable characters; wickedly complex plot; and unforgettable romance take readers deep into the heart of a mysterious watery world, with an alluring new culture to puzzle over and enjoy. VERDICT Another brilliant, thought-provoking fantasy romance from a worldbuilder like no other. Readers could benefit from experiencing the books in order.
