Imagining the future of Gaza beyond the cruelties of occupation and Apartheid, Light in Gaza is a powerful contribution to understanding Palestinian experience.
Gaza, home to two million people, continues to face suffocating conditions imposed by Israel. This distinctive anthology imagines what the future of Gaza could be, while reaffirming the critical role of Gaza in Palestinian identity, history, and struggle for liberation.
Light in Gaza is a seminal, moving and wide-ranging anthology of Palestinian writers and artists. It constitutes a collective effort to organize and center Palestinian voices in the ongoing struggle. As political discourse shifts toward futurism as a means of reimagining a better way of living, beyond the violence and limitations of colonialism, Light in Gaza is an urgent and powerful intervention into an important political moment.

When Americans think of Gaza, if they do, it is generally of a bomb-riddled, dysfunctional hellhole declared "unlivable" by the UN. Yet as Abusalim observes, "What is missing is a meaningful conversation about Gaza, led by Palestinian voices . . . The result is an obscured understanding of the Palestinian experience in Gaza, one that overlooks the rich, diverse, and sophisticated experiences of Palestinians who live there." This anthology is that conversation, featuring Gazans affirming "a Palestinian identity that is deeply rooted in the land . . . ('Oh, my grand-daughter, a lap covered in the soil is better that one covered with gold!')."" There are essays on the Gazan resistance to surveillance and adoption of artificial intelligence, of efforts to rebuild bombed Palestinian libraries, and of unbreakable family ties despite Kafkaesque travel restrictions. The poet Mosab Abu Toha sums up the spirit of Gazan creative resistance in the book's final lines, "Don't ever be surprised to see a rose shoulder up among the ruins of the house: This is how we survived."
