"Brilliant mythology-inspired world-building paves the foundation for Kaner's fantasy adventure, but it's the fully realized ensemble cast that, ultimately, makes the series so memorable."— Elle

"An epic fantasy odyssey." — Entertainment Weekly

Return to the world of Godkiller in this thrilling sequel to the #1 internationally bestselling fantasy debut

When Middren falls to the gods, your kind will be the first to die.

Gods are forbidden in the kingdom of Middren—but now they are stirring, whispering of war. Godkiller Kissen sacrificed herself to vanquish the fire god Hseth, who murdered her family and endangered her friends. But gods cannot be destroyed so easily, and Hseth's power threatens to reform with even greater strength and a thirst for vengeance. As tensions rise throughout the land, the kingdom needs its Godkiller more than ever.

Still reeling from the loss of Kissen, young noble Inara and her little god of white lies, Skedi, have set out to discover more about the true nature of their bond. As the divide between gods and humans widens, Inara and Skedi will uncover secrets that could determine the fate of the war to come.

Meanwhile, Elogast, no longer a loyal knight of King Arren, has been tasked with killing the man he once called friend. The king vowed to eradicate all gods throughout the land, but has now entered into an unholy pact with the most dangerous of them all. And where his heart once beat, a god now burns. . .

The tension escalates in a brewing war between gods and humans in the entertaining second installment of Kaner’s Fallen Gods Trilogy (after Godkiller). After sacrificing herself to save her friends from peril at the end of book one, godkiller Kissen is given one more chance at life through the mercy of Osidisen, god of the sea. He warns her that Hseth, god of fire, has risen again and is waging war, and she must spread the word to her people before it’s too late. Meanwhile, orphaned Inara Craier and her companion Skediceth, the god of white lies, return to Lesscia with their protector, retired knight Elogast. Believing Kissen is dead, they force themselves to move on so that her death is not in vain: Elogast swears to take down his former best friend Arren, a power-hungry king who is under Hseth’s influence, while Inara and Skedi embark on a dangerous mission to discover more about their mysterious bond and their true identities. Though the sequel is not as fast-paced as its predecessor, readers who were hooked by the first book will be satisfied by the action sequences and antics of the wily, unpredictable gods whose mere whims alter the course of the characters’ destinies. This sets things up nicely for the grand finale. Agent: Ginger Clark, Ginger Clark Literary.

Kit Griffiths transports listeners back to Middren for more battles with power-hungry gods and kings in this second installment of the Fallen Gods series. Still reeling from his brush with death, Elogast reckons with his new position as rebellion leader against Arren, the king who is marching through Middren in search of worshippers. At the same time, Inara struggles to find her identity as she grows more distant from her little god of white lies, Skedi. The godkiller Kissen, meanwhile, must rely on the gods' help to find her way back to her chosen family. The political and religious landscape in Middren is shifting, and Griffiths guides listeners through all the resulting angst, anger, and anxiety. Griffiths's performance offers nuance to another outstanding queer-normative fantasy. A.A.H. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine
